LONDON, June 2 (UPI) -- Britain and other European Union nations sold military equipment to Sri Lanka in the last years of its war against Tamil rebels, documents indicate.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The sales, including $22 million worth of armored vehicles, machine gun parts and semiautomatic pistols from Britain, raise questions of whether the EU-approved weapons were used during the final months of Sri Lanka's war when U.N. officials estimate 20,000 civilians were killed, The Times of London reported.

"I think we need answers about what these were used for", Mike Gapes, a Labor Party member of Parliament who chairs the Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee told the newspaper.

"The EU had an obligation not to supply these things", added MP Malcolm Bruce, a Liberal Democrat. "There were too many unanswered questions. With hindsight, Britain's sales did violate the EU code of conduct."

The arms sales show the need for the EU to strengthen its code of conduct on such sales to make it consistent and transparent across all 27 member states, several British MPs and members of the European Parliament told The Times.
