VANNAS, Sweden, June 27 (UPI) -- The Swedish navy has recovered for analysis two boxes of grenades dumped into a lake 55 years ago, officials say.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

About 6,000 grenades were dropped 50 feet to the bottom of Pengsjon Lake outside Vannas in northern Sweden in 1954, where they are said not to be posing any threat to swimmers, the English-language Swedish Web site The Local reported Saturday.

Still, they shouldn't be touched or moved, Johan Widerberg of the 4th Naval Warfare Flotilla told the local newspaper Vasterbottens Folkblad.

"As long as they are just there, they aren't dangerous", he said. "You don't need to worry at all. It's fine to swim and fish and carry on your regular activities."

The Local said military officials have dumped munitions at 108 locations in Sweden over the years, which will now be inventoried and tested to see what has happened to them in the intervening years.
