COPENHAGEN, Denmark, June 17 (UPI) -- European researchers say they found rheumatology patients desired more information on sexual issues, but nurses often do not feel equipped to give it.

In one study, based on the reports of 23 rheumatoid arthritis patients, sexual issues or relationships were considered important by the patients, but had not been part of their rheumatological healthcare.

Male patients said when they reported sexually related sides effects of their medication -- such as erectile dysfunction or reduced libido -- their healthcare professional usually showed a lack of knowledge or interest.

A second study found nurses understood the importance of addressing sexual health with their rheumatology patients, but often did not feel equipped to initiate the discussion.

"Nurses are uniquely positioned to raise the subject of sex with their rheumatology patients, explaining the reasons for any problems and how they might be rectified", study leader Lene Sigaard of the Copenhagen University Hospital, Glostrup, Denmark, said in a statement.

"We hope that our study will contribute to the development of a professional approach towards sexual topics."

Both studies were presented at the annual congress of the European League Against Rheumatism in Copenhagen.
