BAGHDAD, June 28 (UPI) -- U.S. soldiers in Iraq will be allowed to use mine-resistant armored vehicles after their official withdrawal from urban areas, the military said.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

A new policy banning use of the hulking vehicles in cities during daylight hours was withdrawn Saturday after soldiers raised concern about safety, The Washington Post reported Sunday.

U.S. soldiers said using smaller, less-armored, Humvees would put them at greater risk from roadside bombs and grenades, military officials said.

The proposed ban on the vehicles known as MRAPs was an effort by the military to adopt a lower profile after Tuesday, the first deadline in a pact between the U.S. military and Iraq on the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the country.

The pact calls for U.S. soldiers to withdraw from urban areas, though many soldiers will continue to conduct missions in conflicted cities, such as Baghdad, if requested by Iraqi commanders.
