UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- The United Nations Security Council Tuesday backed a call for more Haiti peacekeepers, voting to send an additional 3,500 troops to the devastated island.

The Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 1908, sending 1,500 additional police officers and 2,000 troops as urged by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon following his Sunday visit to earthquake-ravaged Port-au-Prince.

The reinforcements for the U.N.'s Haiti mission will up its staffing levels to 8,940 military troops and 3,711 police officers and are meant to support the immediate recovery, reconstruction and stability efforts following last week's devastating earthquake.

"By approving my proposal ... the Council sends a clear signal the world is with Haiti", Ban told reporters after the vote.

U.N. peacekeeping chief Alain Le Roy said Monday a pledge for 800 troops has already been received from the Dominican Republic and more pledges are expected soon.

Ban, however, said in an opinion piece published in The Washington Post that the Haiti relief effort serves a reminder of the global community's wider responsibilities to help the poor worldwide.

"Those people on the streets of Port-au-Prince asked for jobs, dignity and a better future. That is the hope of all the world's poor", he wrote.
