JERUSALEM, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- A family of five was injured Saturday when they tripped a land mine while hiking in closed military grounds in Israel's Golan Heights, authorities said.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Snow blanketed the area and the family apparently did not see signs warning of mines, said Israeli military officials who issued a statement of regret to the family.

An 11-year-old boy who apparently tripped the mine suffered serious injury to his legs, while his 12-year-old sister suffered moderate shrapnel injuries. Another brother and two adults suffered minor injuries, Haaretz reported.

The explosion occurred in the Mount Avital region of the Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in 1967. Several mine fields remain in the area, but are supposed to be fenced off with barbed wire, Haaretz reported.

The area where the land mine exploded is a clearly marked military zone and reports of people being injured after straying into the area have been few, military officials said.
