EDINBURGH, Scotland, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- An Scottish school boy who lied about his age to join the merchant navy has been identified as the youngest British military casualty of World War II.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Reginald Earnshaw of Edinburgh was to be honored Friday on what would have been his 83rd birthday, The Guardian reported. He is buried in Edinburgh.

Reggie, as he was known to his family, had just turned 14 when he enlisted, claiming to be 15. He was killed with five other members of the crew in July 1941 when German planes attacked the SS North Devon.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission says Earnshaw was 14 years and 152 days old.

Pauline Harvey is to lay a wreath on the grave of the brother she last saw when she was 9. She will be joined by relatives of two of the other men who were killed on the North Devon.

"Reggie's death at such a young age and after just a few months at sea came as a great shock to the family", she said.

Reggie Earnshaw was identified as the youngest casualty after Alf Tubb, 86, a machine gunner on the Devon who was with him when he died, asked for help locating his grave.
