United Press International The Boston Red Sox confirmed Monday they traded three minor league players to the San Diego Padres in exchange for first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Gonzalez, 28, could become a free agent after the 2011 season unless the Red Sox reach a new deal with him. He would have made $6.1 million with San Diego next season.

Gonzalez was the first overall selection in the 2000 draft and has played seven seasons in the major leagues, hitting 168 home runs, knocking in 525 runs and compiling a .284 batting average. Last season he hit .298 with 101 RBI and 31 home runs in 160 games.

He's played in at least 156 games each of the last five seasons but underwent shoulder surgery last month.

Gonzalez has been selected to the National League All-Star team three times and won Gold Gloves after the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

The Padres will receive pitcher Casey Kelly, first baseman Anthony Rizzo and outfielder Reymond Fuentes. All are considered top prospects.
