DALLAS, June 27 (UPI) -- Soaring oil prices have caused U.S. construction costs to rise at twice the rate of most other prices, a builders' association said.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Rising prices of steel and roofing materials have pushed average construction costs for industrial buildings from under $20 per square foot in early 2007 to somewhere between $20 and $30 a square foot, said Rob Huthnance with ProLogis, a global distribution facilities developer.

Statistics from the Associated General Contractors of America show construction costs escalating twice as fast as most prices, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Steel prices for construction projects rose 20 percent in the past 12 months, vice president of Turner Construction Co. Karl F. Almstead told the newspaper.

Costs for lumber and gypsum products have followed the falling price of houses and declined, the report said. But, other material costs such as concrete keep going up.

"I just got kicked in the head yesterday", Donny Mack, the president of the Home Builders Association of Greater Dallas said. "Thirty-year laminated shingles went up in price from $35 to $65 a square", he said.
