NEW YORK, July 2 (UPI) -- Cement truck drivers striking for higher wages in New York City have halted or slowed dozens of construction projects in the Big Apple, observers said.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

More than 400 drivers walked off their jobs Tuesday, affecting work at the new Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, which is the replacement for Shea Stadium, The New York Times reported.

The strike caught many by surprise "because negotiations were going well until the 11th hour and then it fell apart", John Quadrozzi, president of Quadrozzi Concrete Corp. told the Times.

Carolyn Daly, spokeswoman for striking members of Local 282 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, told the newspaper, "the posture is positive; it's not angry."

She predicted the strike would last a few days, which would put many construction crews on an extended Fourth of July break.

"The union has informed us that they will not be contacting us to have additional negotiations until next week", said Joseph Greco Jr., treasurer of the Association of New York City Ready Mix Concrete Producers.
