WASHINGTON, July 22 (UPI) -- Retail sales in the United States gained slightly during the week ending July 19, the International Council of Shopping Centers-USB reported Tuesday.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Shopping gained 0.1 percent on the week and 2.5 percent from a year ago, "the strongest year-over-year reading since Dec. 22, 2007", the report said.

Weather Trends International said it was the first week of the year in which the weather was both warmer and drier compared to a year ago, the report said.

The weather was "great for hot outdoor categories like beverages, air conditioners, fans, sun-care products, stinging insect control items, swimwear and summer apparel on clearance", Weather Trends said.

Gas prices also declined. At a national average $4.064 per gallon, gas prices were 5 cents lower than two weeks ago, the report said.
