WASHINGTON, June 30 (UPI) -- The winter wheat harvest in the 18 largest U.S. wheat growing states is about one-third done, the U.S. Agriculture Department reported Monday.

The harvest is 36 percent accomplished, compared with an historic average of 48 percent done for this week of the year, the USDA said in its weekly crop report.

The soybean crop is 90 percent emerged, compared with a five-year average of 96 percent emerged for this week of the year, the report said.

In the 15 highest-yielding cotton states, 10 percent of the plants have set bolls, close to the 12 percent historic average. The oat crop, however, is further behind with 62 percent of the crop headed out against a five-year average of 77 percent.

Grading crop conditions in the corn belt, six states -- Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Tennessee -- have 70 percent or more of their crop in good or excellent condition, topped by Tennessee with 81 percent. Of the 18 highest-yielding corn states Missouri with 42 percent and North Carolina with 28 percent are the only two with less than half their crop in good to excellent condition, the report said.
