MUMBAI, June 2 (UPI) -- The inaugural Indian Premier League cricket final was a thriller as the Rajasthan Royals hit the winning run on the last ball against the Chennai Super Kings.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The Sunday climax in Mumbai saw the Royals, captained by veteran Australian spinner Shane Warne, win by three wickets after Pakistan's Sohail Tanvir hit the winning run on the last ball of the 20 overs for a final score of 164 runs against the Super Kings' 163 for five wickets.

The IPL, India's entry into sports spectaculars such as the U.S. Super Bowl, pitted 8 franchise teams whose players included both world-class cricketers and Indians dreaming of getting into the big league.

Batting first, Chennai turned in a total of 163 runs from 20 overs, with Suresh Raina contributing the highest run total, 43. Yusuf Pathan for the Royals took three of Chennai's wickets for 22 runs.

Pathan came back with a similar stellar performance when his team batted, smashing 56 runs.

Chennai had a chance to pull off a victory, but its hopes were dashed by Tanvir's contribution on the very last ball.
