JERUSALEM, July 6 (UPI) -- An ancient tablet with Hebrew writing that offers details about a messiah figure is causing controversy in Israel, experts say.

Daniel Boyarin of the University of California at Berkeley says the tablet, which some experts suspect was discovered near the Dead Sea in Jordan, will likely shock most Christians who read its revelations regarding a messiah figure akin to Jesus Christ, The New York Times reported Sunday.

"Some Christians will find it shocking -- a challenge to the uniqueness of their theology -- while others will be comforted by the idea of it being a traditional part of Judaism", the professor of Talmudic culture said.

Among the revelations on the 3-foot-tall tablet, is a prediction that a messiah will rise from the dead three days after dying.

The Times said some scholars have dated the tablet decades before Jesus was born, meaning the artifact could indicate the messiah was part of a long-standing Jewish tradition.

The stone tablet was found a decade ago at an unspecified location and only came to light after an Israeli scholar published a paper on it last year, the newspaper said.
