LOS ANGELES, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Hollywood's Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures said Wednesday it has signed Vadim Perelman to direct its supernatural thriller "Poltergeist."

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Cale Boyter, executive vice president of production, and Luke Ryan, vice president of production, are overseeing the project for MGM.

"We are excited to have Vadim direct 'Poltergeist,' a title which already has a built-in movie-going audience", Boyter said in a statement. "With his established track record, we look forward to having him lead the creative direction on this new character-based horror project that will utilize the original film as a jumping off point."

Currently directing and executive producing "Ice", a drama pilot for the AMC cable network, Perelman wrote and directed the 2003 film "House of Sand and Fog."

He also recently directed "The Life Before Her Eyes", starring Uma Thurman and Evan Rachel Wood.

Released by MGM in 1982, the original film earned three Oscar nominations and gained a cult following.

Two big-screen sequels -- "Poltergeist II: The Other Side" and "Poltergeist III" -- followed, along with a television series "Poltergeist: The Legacy", which aired for four seasons on the Showtime network from 1996 through 1999.

Juliet Snowden and Stiles White are writing the new "Poltergeist" script, MGM said.
