CULVER CITY, Calif., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- A filmed version of the last night of the historic run of the Broadway musical "Rent" is to be shown in some movie theaters, The Hot Ticket said.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

"Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway" is to play limited engagement performances at select theaters at the end of this month, said The Hot Ticket, Sony Pictures Releasing's new special programming division.

"This is the first time that a Broadway show has been available in movie theaters across the U.S. and Canada, and I can't think of a better occasion than the closing of 'Rent.' It's the show that defined Broadway for a generation and now that it's ending its long run, The Hot Ticket presentation is a perfect way for the show to celebrate with its many fans -- no matter where they live", Rory Bruer, president of Sony Pictures Releasing, said in a statement.

The Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning musical is to end its 12-year run on Broadway Sunday.

"As groundbreaking as 'Rent' was in its Broadway debut, it is a privilege for us to be part of bringing it in an innovative way to the screen", Jon Kamen, chief executive officer of @radical.media, the firm filming the finale, said in a statement. "We're excited to explore an amazing opportunity for live theater and capture the minds and imaginations of cinema-goers across the country. Perhaps it's ironic that 'Rent' will be as groundbreaking again when it closes."
