NASHVILLE, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- U.S. singer-songwriter Will Hoge is expected to recover from serious injuries sustained in a crash of his motor scooter in Nashville, officials said.

Hoge, 35, was listed in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center but hospital officials said he's expected to pull through, The Tennessean newspaper in Nashville reported Thursday.

Police said Hoge's scooter collided with a van that allegedly failed to yield at a Nashville intersection Wednesday night, The Tennessean reported, adding that no evidence of alcohol or drugs was apparent. The van driver wasn't injured.

A post on Hoge's MySpace page said the accident happened while he was leaving a studio session.

"The entire Will Hoge family appreciates your tremendous outpouring of concern, support and prayers", the post said.

Hoge is an important figure in the "alternative country" genre, which features rock music tinged with traditional country overtones and eschews the big production values of slicker Nashville sounds. Hoge left a promising career with a major record label and instead recorded and toured as an independent artist, The Tennessean said.

Hoge was recording a follow-up to last year's highly praised "Draw the Curtains" album and was set to perform in September as part of Nashville's 2008 Americana Music Festival.
