PEMBROKE PINES, Fla., July 9 (UPI) -- An airplane mechanic says that a plane that crashed in South Florida was an experimental aircraft equipped with a converted Corvette engine.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The Lancair IV-P, built from a kit, crashed Monday at the North Perry Airport. Family members say that the owner of the plane, Doug Pohl, a pathologist who lived in Jupiter, was the pilot, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

The National Transportation Safety Board expects to release a preliminary report within a week, investigator Jose Obregon said.

Larry Cappolino, a mechanic at the airport, told the newspaper that Pohl had replaced the plane's engine with one from a Chevrolet Corvette.

Patrick Panzera, editor of Contact, a magazine for amateur airplane enthusiasts, said that installing converted car engines in small planes is fairly common. The car engines, even with the cost of conversion, are cheaper and also use less in fuel.

Timothy Ong of Lancair International said the company does not encourage the use of converted engines. The Federal Aviation Administration does not ban them but a spokeswoman said the converted engines need to meet specific airworthiness standards.
