FORT LAUDERDALE, Ga., July 12 (UPI) -- Florida's Democratic Party has registered more than six times as many new voters this year as the state GOP has, elections officials said.

Democrats registered 106,508 new voters from January through May, while the Republican Party picked up just 16,686 new voters during the same period, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Saturday.

Marian Johnson, political director for the Florida Chamber of Commerce, called the trend a "huge swing."

"I looked at that and said, 'Wow,'" she told the newspaper.

The upswing in registered Democrats could contribute to a potential wave of support for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, and could signal a shift in the balance of political power that could affect Florida politics for a generation, the Sun-Sentinel said.

Mitch Ceasar, chairman of Broward County's Democratic Party organization, said the Republican Party downturn is a consequence of President George Bush's unpopularity, but he also said the "Democratic brand has cycled back."

State GOP officials said the registration numbers could change between now and Election Day.
