BRUNSWICK, Ga., June 28 (UPI) -- A 10-year-old female loggerhead turtle is about to roam free in the Atlantic Ocean after spending her life so far in aquariums and refuges.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island plans to release the turtle, named Dylan, Monday, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Dylan was born on Jekyll Island and rescued as a hatchling. She spent her early years at the Tidelands Nature Center but was transferred to the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta when she outgrew her tank.

Last year, she moved back to Jekyll Island to the sea turtle center to be trained for life on her own. Officials say her carapace or upper shell, now a foot-and-a-half long, has grown enough that she will be safe in the ocean.

Dylan is to be fitted with a radio transmitter so scientists can track her travels at sea.

Like other marine turtles, loggerhead numbers have dropped because of human encroachment on the beaches where they lay eggs and deaths from entanglement in fishing gear and collisions with boats.
