ATLANTA, April 28 (UPI) -- GOP leaders in Georgia say the enthusiasm for presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama in the Feb. 5 Democratic primary does not reflect state partisanship.

Obama handily won the primary.

But Georgia Republicans said despite the apparent Obama surge in the state, the Georgia Democratic Party is scrambling to get legislative candidates on the ballot. The GOP said the Democrats launched "robocalls" -- an automated calling campaign -- during the weekend in a "last-ditch effort" to find candidates, The Atlantic Journal Constitution reported.

Democratic leaders acknowledged they did begin a search for candidates in three rural Georgia House districts occupied by GOP legislators.

Georgia Republican Chairwoman Sue Everhart called the effort "the discredited style of politics that has caused Georgia voters to reject the Democratic Party.".

But Martin Matheny, spokesman for the Georgia Democratic Party, said the strategy was an attempt at campaign parity.

"We figure if the GOP does it, we should do it, too", he said.
