BOSTON, July 10 (UPI) -- The rural flatlands northeast of Denver is the U.S. area most prone to tornadoes, a hazard mapping firm said.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The prone area is "not downtown, but a rural area to the northeast", CDS Business Mapping LLC of Boston said.

No. 2 is Houston, followed by three Florida cities: Miami, Hollywood and Tampa, CDS said.

Rounding out the top 10 are Lincoln, Ill.; Lakeland, Fla.; Little Rock, Ark.; Cape Coral, Fla., and Oklahoma City, said CDS, which based its list on the RiskMeter Online's Tornado Model.

The model predicts the severity of tornadoes anywhere in the continental United States.

In an average year, the United States experiences 1,200 tornadoes, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.

These violent, rotating columns of air typically kill 55 people, injure 1,500 others and cause more than $40 million in damage.
