LANSING, Mich., June 24 (UPI) -- The Michigan Legislature has agreed on a package of bills that would allow the state to join a bi-national compact to preserve the Great Lakes.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The legislation is expected to be voted on this week, The Detroit News reported. Michigan and Pennsylvania are the only Great Lakes states that have not yet signed the compact, which includes eight states and two Canadian provinces.

The five lakes hold 20 percent of the world's fresh surface water and 90 percent of the fresh surface water available in the United States. The compact, which must also be approved by the U.S. Congress, would bar water-thirsty western states from removing water from the lakes.

Under the agreement, all states must pass their own water-use regulations. In Michigan, legislators decided to do so as part of the process of joining the compact, one reason the state is late signing on.

The 12-bill package is the result of two years of negotiations that included business groups, farmers and environmentalists.
