POLL: Your Opinion

 » What Do You Think

DETROIT, June 23 (UPI) -- The two likely U.S. presidential major party candidates are taking different routes to secure votes in the key swing state of Michigan, analysts say.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., the presumptive Democratic candidate, ignored the state in the primary season, taking his name off the ballot when its Democratic Party moved up primary election date in defiance of national party leaders. Now, he's using frequent appearances to make up for lost time in Michigan, the Detroit News reported Monday.

"Barack Obama has a lot of making up to do in Michigan after ignoring Michiganders for months", Jeff Sadowsky, a spokesman for Obama's probable Republican opponent, U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told the newspaper. "John McCain has had an organization of supporters in the state since 2000, and has brought together Republicans and many independents."

Sadowsky said McCain, rather than concentrating his appearances in states considered to be political battlegrounds, is basing them on what topic is emphasizing. Thus, he hasn't appeared in Michigan since early May, the News said.

Meanwhile, Obama visited the state three times in May and June, the newspaper said.
