WARRENTON, Mo., Aug. 4 (UPI) -- The owner of a Missouri animal farm says she shot a tiger after it had attacked and injured a 26-year-old volunteer.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Sandra Smith, owner of the Wesa-A-Geh-Ya animal farm near Warrenton, Mo., told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch she shot and wounded the tiger after it mauled the volunteer, who was trying to coax it into a smaller cage. Her husband, Ken Smith, fired a second shot to kill the tiger.

The injured volunteer and another farm worker at first told authorities they had been attacked by a dog, but the truth came out after the victim was airlifted to a hospital, the newspaper said.

The Smiths have been cited in the past, receiving probation for failing to keep the cages properly locked in 2003 and again receiving probation in May for failing to register some animals, the newspaper said. Sandra Smith said the tiger, like many other exotic animals she has, was left anonymously at her door.

"I'm so damn tired of people out there thinking I'm doing bad things", she said. "We're not bad people, we're just trying to give these animals some kind of quality life."
