SEA BRIGHT, N.J., June 29 (UPI) -- Scientists say they hope to get a pod of dolphins out of a New Jersey river before the busy July Fourth weekend.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The coastal bottlenose dolphins, about 20 of them, appear to be healthy as they swim the Shrewsbury River and feast on menhaden, the Asbury Park Press reported. They have attracted hundreds of people watching them from the riverbanks and boats.

"They're feeding. We saw fish in their mouths. They have bunker (menhaden), and bunker is one of their favorite foods", said Annie Gorgone, a marine mammal expert with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration lab in Beaufort, N.C. "If the buffet's open, are you going to leave?"

Don McMillan of the NOAA lab at Sandy Hook, N.J., said boaters have become better-behaved, keeping their distance from the dolphins. He said boaters have been told to stay at least 50 yards away.

Gorgone said herding dolphins is difficult, especially when they are in relatively deep water, like that in the Shrewsbury. She said scientists might use noise and boats to try to encourage the dolphins to depart if they do not move on their own.
