POLL: Your Opinion

PRINCETON, N.J., June 23 (UPI) -- Confidence in U.S. banks has fallen to near record lows set in the recession of the early 1990s, Gallup researchers said.

Gallup, tracking confidence in banking since April 1979, said the 32 percent of respondents who indicated they have confidence in U.S. banks in a recent poll is close to the low of 30 percent recorded in October 1991, a recession year.

A significant drop in the confidence in banks is rare, Gallup said, noting the credit crunch, massive write-downs from subprime mortgages and the federal bailout of investment bank Bear Stearns as reasons "this has not been a good year for banking."

The figure is also notable when compared with confidence in other institutions, such as Congress, where confidence figures haven't dropped significantly this year, Gallup said.

The survey of 822 adults was conducted June 9-12 and carries a margin of error of 4 percentage points, Gallup said.
