PHOENIX, May 28 (UPI) -- Searchers said Wednesday they had not given up hope of finding a Utah couple who failed to emerge from a weeklong hiking expedition in the Grand Canyon.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The effort to find Alan Humphrey, 39, and his wife Iris Faraklas, 35, was being done by ground, air and water, WSL-TV reported.

"It's a fairly large area", Maureen Oltrogge of the Grand Canyon National Park told the Salt Lake City television station.

Oltrogge expressed optimism for a good outcome despite the rugged terrain, noting Humphrey and Faraklas were experienced and had obtained permits for the 45-mile hike along the Royal Arch route.

"We get reports that people are overdue, but then they show up shortly after. So it does happen, but not as often as you may think", she said.

The Salt Lake City couple had permits that ran from May 17-23, ABC News reported. Humphrey's mother, who lives in Arizona, reported them "overdue" Sunday, the network said.
