| SEBRING, Fla., June 22 (UPI) -- A noted panther expert and a citrus grower have been killed in a plane crash in Florida, a state wildlife official said. SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission official Darrell Land said University of Kentucky Professor Dave Maehr, 52, an expert on the Florida panther, died in the Friday crash along with citrus grower Mason Smoak, The St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reported Saturday. "He (Maehr) was known throughout North America and probably throughout the world for his body of work", Land said of his late colleague. "That will continue, but he'll be sorely missed." Land told the Times Maehr had a wife and two grown children. The crash occurred while Maehr was conducting aerial surveys of Highlands County's black bear population.
