KREMMLING, Colo., July 21 (UPI) -- DNA analysis may reveal what happened to a U.S. Navy intelligence specialist fatally shot in the back of the head 27 years ago, investigators say.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Crime investigators say they believe Laszlo Boszormenyi was the victim of a random shooting by a local robber near Kremmling, Colo. His sister and former colleagues, however, say they think he was targeted by a Cold War spy, The Denver Post reported Monday.

Whatever the outcome, "This could be one of our last chances to develop evidence in this case", said Matt Harmon, a court investigator.

Agents from the then-Naval Investigative Service -- now Naval Criminal Investigative Service -- and Grand County sheriff's investigators concluded Boszormenyi's Jan. 29, 1981, slaying was a robbery in which the killer lifted Boszormenyi's wallet holding more than $1,000. He was driving from San Diego, where he was stationed, to Omaha, where he was enrolled in an intelligence course.

Harmon said, he doesn't think a spy would wait until Boszormenyi got to Colorado, then shoot him along a highway as school buses whizzed by.

But the victim's sister, Margaret Hill, said the theory that a stranger spent hours getting to know her brother before killing him in a random robbery, didn't sound plausible to her.
