KELOWNA, British Columbia, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- The Kelowna City Council has ordered a firm hired to kill 2,000 rabbits in the Canadian city to quit using air rifles to achieve its goal, a city official said.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The council hired EBB Environmental Consulting Inc. in May at a cost of $54,000 after residents complained rabbits were overrunning their neighborhoods.

But the City Council acted after a media report that the company's workers killed the animals inhumanely. The Canadian Broadcast Corp. reported this week that a security guard allegedly saw workers stomping on a rabbit's head, apparently after being shot with an air rifle. A worker appeared to break its neck to finally kill it.

City Parks Manager Joe Creron said in a statement Wednesday the rabbit-culling techniques were under review and the use of air rifles was had been suspended as of Tuesday.

The security guard reported the matter to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which was investigating.

EBB has said the rabbit was dead or close to death and its muscles were twitching, so the worker broke its neck to finish the job.
