GREENWICH, Conn., July 22 (UPI) -- The arrest of a Connecticut swimming pool contractor may spur pool owners and operators to upgrade the safety of the drains, safety officials say.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Powerful suction from uncovered pool drains have caused the deaths of 30 children since the 1980s, and the issue was highlighted by Monday's first-ever arrest of a contractor for violating pool safety codes, ABC News reported.

The network said David Lionetti, of Greenwich, Conn., was arrested on manslaughter charges in the drowning death of 6-year-old Zachary Cohn, who died last summer after becoming trapped in the drain of a family pool installed by Lionetti's company.

"As a result of this arrest we are anticipating that many pools will now be made safe and compliant", said Paul Pennington, spokesman for the Pool Safety Consortium, adding that legally mandated drain cover devices and a safety release system would have saved the boy's life.
