TOWNSVILLE, Australia, June 21 (UPI) -- The father of a young U.S. woman who died during her 2003 Australian honeymoon tells The Australian he has long been suspicious of her husband.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

David Gabriel Watson, 31, of Helena, Ala., was charged with the murder of his wife this week after an inquest in Townsville, Australia. Tina Thomas Watson drowned less than two weeks after her wedding in an apparent diving accident on the Great Barrier Reef.

"It was the result we were looking for", Tommy Thomas said.

Thomas, his wife, surviving daughter and two nieces watched the coroner deliver his findings by video link to Nashville.

Watson, who did not return to Australia for the inquest, has made no public statement. Bob Austin, his U.S. lawyer, called the charge "ludicrous" and said he had no motive to kill his wife.

Thomas said that he has not seen Watson since a meeting three weeks after Tina's funeral. The meeting was in the office of Watson's lawyer.

"The discussion was primarily to let me know that Gabe had married Tina and even though they were married only a short time, anything that had belonged to Tina now belonged to him", Thomas said.

Thomas said that Tina, not long before the wedding, told him Watson had asked her to increase her company life insurance to the maximum.
