ALBURY, Australia, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Three skiers were killed in Australia's Kosciuszko National Park in three separate incidents, including a deadly avalanche, witnesses say.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Nicholas Reese, 44, said he saw Tom Carr-Boyd, 22, get swallowed up by a major avalanche and unsuccessfully attempt to free himself from the deadly pile of moving snow, The Age reported in its Tuesday edition.

"He was trying to swim his way to the top. (After an avalanche, the snow) turns slushy until it stops (tumbling) and then it packs down really hard. While it's still fluid, you try and swim to the top", Reese said of Sunday's incident.

Despite a desperate attempt by Carr-Boyd's older brother, Peter, the physical education teacher died. The Age said the avalanche was started when Carr-Boyd accidentally stepped on a fragile section of ice.

Meanwhile, both Malcolm Ripper, 48, and Kevin Lane, 65, were killed in the park Sunday after running into trees during their ski runs. The Age said the incidents took place on separate ski runs at an area resort and both men likely died on impact.
