BAQUBA, Iraq, June 22 (UPI) -- Iraqi officials say a female suicide bomber killed at least 16 people and wounded 40 others Sunday at a crowded area of Baquba in Iraq's Diyala province.

Authorities say the woman appeared to target a police patrol and a restaurant frequented by Iraqi security forces, CNN reported, adding police officers appeared to be among the casualties.

Military officials told the U.S. network that more women are being recruited by the al-Qaida In Iraq terrorist group, carrying out more than 20 female suicide bombings in Iraq this year.

"We do see certain members of cells attempting to persuade women -- specifically, in many cases, wives of those who have been killed as terrorists -- to conduct suicide operations", Maj. Gen. Mark Hertling told CNN.
