KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- A trial was under way Monday in Kansas City, Mo., for the accused killer of "Precious Doe", a young girl whose head was found in a trash bag in 2001.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Authorities contend Harrell Johnson, 29, was dating 3-year-old Erica Green's mother when he kicked the child to death and, with the aid of her mother, Michelle Johnson, 33, cut off the child's head and dumped her body, The Kansas City Star reported.

Johnson has pleaded guilty and could testify against Harrell, prosecutors said.

Police found the girl's body in Kansas City and days later her head was found nearby in a trash bag. The identity of the child remained unknown until 2005 when an Oklahoma man whose tips police had ignored for months contacted a civilian investigator, the newspaper said.

The discovery of the body, nicknamed "Precious Doe", had gained national media attention.
