LOS ANGELES, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- California authorities say they're digging near a Los Angeles freeway for the remains of a 1960s victim of convicted child serial murderer Mack Ray Edwards.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Local, state and federal officials spent Sunday excavating a site near a freeway overpass in the city's Moorpark area for the body of Roger Dale Madison, a 16-year-old neighbor and family friend of Edwards' whom he admitted stabbing to death in December 1968, The Los Angeles Times said.

Edwards, who hanged himself in his jail cell in 1971, admitted to killing six children in the 1950s and 1960s and burying some of them along freeways he was helping to build as a heavy-equipment operator for the California Department of Transportation.

He never could recall the exact location of Madison's burial place, the newspaper said, but after more than a year of investigation, California authorities say they have discerned the location. They say they believe it is beside what are now the southbound lanes of California Highway 23 at the Tierra Rejada Road exit.

The Times said the dig for Madison's body, which started Sunday, could take anywhere from one or two days to a week or more to complete.
