SASKATOON, Saskatchewan, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Police in Saskatoon, Canada, Tuesday shot and killed a 100-pound wild cougar spotted relaxing in a man's yard.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Police said they killed the 6-foot cat rather than tranquilize it because of fears it might have harmed someone before it could be controlled, the Canadian Broadcast Corp. reported.

John Rutherford, who owned the property where the cougar showed up, said it didn't display any aggression. He wasn't too happy about the decision to kill it.

"I was walking back into the yard and saw the cat laying there. Just kinda looking at me. Calm. No problem", Rutherford said. "Come on, spend a little money and take care of our animals. They're protected. We shouldn't be killing them in people's back yards."

But Gary Provencher, a conservation officer, said authorities can't take chances.

"Public safety, sorry, is our first priority", Provencher said. "The cougar, whether he lives or dies, takes second (place)."

Officials said the cougar was wearing a global positioning system tracking device on a collar. Its last known position was about 700 miles to the south in the Black Hills region of South Dakota in the United States last April.
