LONDON, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- A man who took part in a bloody siege of London's Iranian Embassy will remain in England rather than be deported to Iran, officials said Thursday.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Fowzi Nejad, 50 -- the 1980 siege's last surviving gunman -- won't be deported when he is released from prison after 28 years because of fears he would be tortured or executed in his home country, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Britain's Home Office will grant instead him Special Immigration Status, used for foreign criminals, and will be closely monitored, the newspaper said.

A Home Office spokesman said, in general, "Our aim is to deport people as quickly as possible but the law requires us to first obtain assurances that the person being returned will not face certain death."

The Home Office has given Nejad permission to stay in Britain for six months, when it will review his situation again.

While in Britain, he will receive government food vouchers, the newspaper said. The total taxpayer bill to keep Nejad in the country will be more than $1,700 a month, it said.

Nejad was among six militants who stormed the Iranian Embassy in central London on April 30, 1980, taking 26 people hostage. The siege lasted six days and two hostages were killed.
