LONDON, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- A 23-year-old man who fatally shot former British boxing champion James Oyebola in London will spend at least 28 years in prison, a judge said.

London Central Criminal Court Judge Peter Rook sentenced Kanyanya Mulenga to a minimum prison sentence of 28 years for shooing Oyebola in the back of the neck at a London bar last year, The Daily Telegraph said Thursday.

The 46-year-old father-of-three was killed after asking several men to stop smoking inside the bar since a British smoking ban was in place for public indoor facilities.

Rook criticized Mulenga for both the killing and the "trivial" reason that motivated the murderous response, the Telegraph reported.

"This was nothing short of a brutal killing carried out for the most trivial of reasons", the judge said.

The newspaper said while a professional boxer, Oyebola earned a bronze medal at the 1986 Commonwealth Games.
