BAGHDAD, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Military officials say U.S. soldiers killed at least six Iraqi security personnel after Iraqi troops allegedly shot at a U.S. patrol boat on the Tigris River.

At least 10 more Iraqis were wounded in the Wednesday incident when a U.S. helicopter defended a patrol boat being fired on near Tarmiya, north of Baghdad, CNN reported.

The Iraqi security personnel took the patrol boat as a hostile force and apparently didn't realize they were firing on U.S. troops in the boat, CNN reported.

Three police officers, two soldiers and a member of the Sunni Awakening Council were killed when the helicopter returned fire, CNN reported.
