Johnson Matthey Inc., owner and operator of the gold and silver refining facility in Salt Lake City admitted it violated the Clean Water Act by failing to properly report waste water discharges, the U.S. Justice Department said in a statement. The company will pay a $3 million fine.

The plant's former manager, Paul Greaves, and general manager, John McKelvie, also pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to making false statements in relation to requirements for reporting pollutants. Greaves was sentenced to one year probation, a $500 fine and 20 hours community service and McKelvie was sentenced to one year probation, a $1,000 fine and 20 hours community service.

A federal investigation found the company had failed to report it was exceeding its allowed discharge of selenium, a problem it had from 1996 to 2002.
