MOSCOW, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Police say the host of a popular religious television program in southern Russia died Wednesday after being attacked by gunmen.

Telman Alishayev, a prominent journalist and the host of "Peace to Your Home", was attacked in his car Tuesday night in the village of Separatorny in the Republic of Daghestan, RIA Novosti reported.

The attack on Alishayev is one of a series of attacks that have made Russia one of the world's most dangerous countries for reporters, said Reporters Without Borders, noting 21 journalists were killed in Russia from 2000-07.

In another recent attack on a journalist, Magomed Yevloyev, who ran a Web site critical of the government in the Republic of Ingushetia, was shot Sunday by a police officer after he was detained for questioning, RIA Novosti reported.

While police called the shooting an accident, colleagues of Yevloyev called his killing an orchestrated campaign to silence a critical voice in the region, said the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
