LEIPZIG, Germany, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- German neo-Nazis are trying to gain support for themselves by demonstrating in favor of the death penalty for child abusers, political observers say.

The neo-Nazi National Democratic Party movement has staged torchlight marches in Leipzig in the wake of the slaying of an 8-year-old girl there. Local politicians say it is a blatant attempt to cash in on a tragedy by stirring up resentment, the German magazine Der Spiegel reported Wednesday.

"The NPD is trying to gain support by pretending to be a normal party and milking the frustration and fear of the people of Leipzig", Friedemann Bringt, project manager at a government-funded consultancy on combating racism, told the magazine. "We're concerned that this strategy may pay off for them."

The anti-child abuse marches are part of larger strategy by far-right groups to exploit a number of hot-button emotional public issues such as child abuse, drugs, immigration and unemployment, experts told Der Spiegel.
