SEATTLE, July 29 (UPI) -- A U.S. Army officer based in Washington state has pleaded guilty to conspiring to export gun parts to Japan without a license.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Capt. Tomoaki Ishiba, who was stationed at Fort Lewis, entered his plea Monday in federal court in Seattle, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported.

Ishiba, the son of a Tokyo police officer, joined the Army after immigrating to the United States in 1993 and served with the 82nd Airborne in Afghanistan. He was later assigned to be a liaison with the Japanese military, a position that made him a celebrity in Japan.

He admitted that, beginning in 2006, he bought firearms parts in the United States and smuggled them to Japan to contacts he had made through his Army position.

Federal prosecutors said that they do not believe Ishiba intended to do any harm to the security of the United States or that any illegal acts he committed harmed the country's security. His plea agreement calls for a probationary sentence.

He is scheduled to be sentenced in November and may also face discipline by the Army.
