Mayor Adrian Fenty said city leaders are attempting to adjust municipal ordinances to comply with last month's high court ruling, which for the first time established an individual right to bear arms under the Second Amendment, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

District of Columbia residents could be filing applications for gun permits as early as this week, a process that would require a written examination, proof of residency, good vision and ballistic testing, the newspaper said. The applicants also would have to pay a fee and agree to fingerprinting and criminal background checks.

But there could be more legal trouble ahead for the city. It does not plan to modify its ban on semiautomatic handguns, which has drawn the promise of another lawsuit from gun proponents.

"The semiautomatic ban is clearly unconstitutional", attorney Alan Gura told the Post. "The overwhelming majority of handguns people use in the United States are semiautomatic."
