SAN FRANCISCO, June 28 (UPI) -- The National Rifle Association filed suit Friday challenging the San Francisco Housing Authority's gun possession ban in city-administered public housing.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The lawsuit came a day after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that individuals have a right to handguns in their homes, overturning a handgun ban in the District of Columbia, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The NRA lawsuit, filed in federal court, claims San Francisco's ban violates residents' Second Amendment right to keep a handgun at home for self-protection.

The suit is intended to lead to a ruling that clarifies whether cities and states can be sued under the Second Amendment, an NRA lawyer said. Washington is under federal jurisdiction.

San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera said he was confident the city's gun ban was legal and would be upheld in court.
