ORLANDO, Fla., July 7 (UPI) -- Florida is considering offering classes in gun safety to high school students to spice up their choices for physical education.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The gun safety classes are among a number of changes the State Board of Education is planning under a new law boosting the amount of time students spend engaging in physical education, WKMG-TV, Orlando, reported Monday.

It's all part of an effort to tackle childhood obesity and promote a health, active lifestyle, officials say.

"If you are going to attract students to take PE at the high school level, you need to try and offer a menu where the districts can provide those courses as an elective course", said Todd Clark, who is leading the process for the board.

Besides gun classes, other suggestions include canoeing, golf and gymnastics.

"We want PE to be more than throwing a ball", Clark said.

The public is being asked to comment on the proposed changes.
