KAUHAJOKI, Finland, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- The officer who didn't take the gun from the man who then went on a fatal shooting spree at a Finnish college could face criminal charges, prosecutors said.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Timo Lousma, the investigating prosecutor, said he had reason to believe the police officer violated his duties out of carelessness when he didn't take a gun or a gun permit from Matti Sarri, who in September killed nine people at a vocational school in Kauhajoki, Helsingin Sanomat reported Wednesday. A 10th victim died of carbon monoxide poisoning from fires Sarri set and Sarri shot himself and died of his wounds at a hospital.

Saari posted a video on the Internet of him shooting at a target range, prompting a police visit before the Sept. 23 shootings. Saari wasn't at home when the police initially visited his home and the officer in charge of gun licenses questioned Saari about the matter the next day. After the interview took place, the officer decided to let Saari keep the weapon and permit.

The officer could be charged with inadvertent violation of official duties, the newspaper said. Prosecutors stressed an investigation didn't mean the officer would be indicted.
