CHICAGO, June 28 (UPI) -- The National Rifle Association, after a legal victory in the U.S. Supreme Court, is suing the city of Chicago in an effort to repeal its handgun ban.

The NRA also has filed suit against the Chicago suburbs of Evanston, Morton Grove and Oak Park in hopes of leveraging Thursday's high court decision overturning a similar gun ban in Washington D.C., the Chicago Tribune reported Saturday.

The NRA joined the Second Amendment Foundation and the Illinois State Rifle Association in legal efforts to strike down Chicago's 26-year-old ban on handguns.

The Supreme Court's 5-4 decision, which found that Second Amendment to the United States Constitution establishes the right to own a handgun for personal self-defense, has opened the door for a series of lawsuits around the country aimed at eliminating local ordinances restricting the use of guns.

The NRA's suit brought quick condemnations from Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and Jody Weis, the city's police superintendent, the Tribune said.
